Who We Are
OUR Organisation
Pride in STEM was founded in 2016 by Dr. Alfredo Carpineti together with his husband Chris, and Matt Young, a graduate researcher at the University of Nottingham.
We are a registered charity since 2022
Registered Charity Number 1197921
Pride in STEM is a charity, currently with ten trustees who are based in the UK and Canada. We run events and activities together with our extensive network of volunteers from around the UK and abroad. We were nominated for the Gay Times Honours in 2017.
Since our inception, our goal has been to raise the profile of LGBT+ people in science, technology, engineering and maths/medicine (STEM) as well as to highlight the struggles LGBTSTEM people often face. We aim to “queer up science spaces” and to “science up queer spaces”.
We are one of the organizations that started and spearhead the International Day of LGBTQIA+ people in STEM, which is celebrated annually on November 18.
The main vehicle to raise awareness across the UK has been our Out Thinkers events. These events provide a platform to highlight members of our community and bring people together. Typically, over a period of thirty minutes to a couple of hours, between two and seven speakers talk about their areas of interest and their LGBTQ+ journey. We run these events in queer bars, theatres, tech companies, museums, universities, or research institutions. Each speaker is encouraged to open the first few minutes of every talk with their own experience about being LGBTQ+ in STEM. The goal is to break down any barriers between those who do STEM work and people who are interested in it, as well as highlight the positive and negative aspects of being an underrepresented group in STEM.
To date, we have run events with the Science Museum, the Francis Crick Institute, Stonewall, The British Science Association, Imperial College London, Monzo, the University of Cambridge, The Royal Maritime Museum, and the European Space Agency.
