STATEMENT in support of Black Lives Matter, 5th June 2020
The International Day of LGBTQ+ People in STEM is in full support and solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, their protests against police brutality, and their struggle for equality. We grieve for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and the countless lives lost due to racism.
Systemic racism is far too common in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths and, as a collective, we have reflected on what we need to do to increase our efforts in challenging discrimination against Black, indigenous, and people of colour in STEM.
Our first commitment is to revise the LGBTQ+ STEM Day toolkit before this year’s event, making it more explicitly anti-racist and intersectional, and providing more guidance to those organizations that use it.
Our organizing collective is composed of people from different organizations, different countries, and different identities. That said, the majority of our collective are white and from a Western anglophone country.
For this reason, we want more LGBTQ+STEM day events to specifically encourage leadership and explicit sharing of the experiences of marginalised queer-intersectional identities. We will also recruit more Black organizers to our collective, and we will collaborate with more organizations dedicated to supporting Black people in STEM.
The International Day of LGBTQ+ People in STEM does not receive any funding directly, but if this were to change, we would only accept money from organizations equally committed to anti-racism.
We stand firmly against racism and prejudice in all its forms, and we commit to collaborating only with individuals, groups, and institutions who share these values.
In solidarity,
The Organizing Collective for the International Day of LGBTQ+ People in STEM
LGBTSTEMDay 2020: A potential new date & more opportunities to make a difference
When we selected a date for the first International Day of LGBTQ+ people in STEM, our rationale was to find a time close enough to Pride Month that didn’t conflict with any other major events or days of celebration. Since the very beginning, we have discussed July...
March With Us!
Saturday 6th July will see Pride in STEM at the forefront (quite literally) of this year's march for Pride in London. Nothing quite beats the thrill of walking, placards raised, cheering and laughing, being buoyed by the enthusiasm of the crowd. Great fun; we got a...
Pride in STEM needs your opinions for this LGBTSTEM Day
Last year for LGBTSTEM Day we asked people to submit a video of themselves with a simple phrase “I’m LGBTQ and I’m in STEM!” The video and the message were simple by design as we were approaching the daunting task of co-launching the international day, we wanted a...
Pride in STEM Talks Diversity at the European Space Agency
Mid-January is the time for pushing forward on resolutions - a fitting time, then, for a workshop pushing on with the inclusion agenda at the European Space Agency (ESA). Opened by the Johann-Dietrich Wörner, and by Franco Ongaro, Director of Technology, Engineering...
Pride in STEM does Pride Proud
Pride in STEM has two major stories – we wish to “queer up science spaces” and “science up queer spaces”. Leading in these activities, for the former we have our Out Thinkers programme of evening talks which enables us to queer up science spaces, and promote role...
LGBTSTEM Day – Press Release
LGBTQ+ people in science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) continue to struggle to openly be themselves, and this cannot continue. This change must happen as soon as possible, and so July 5th will be #LGBTSTEMDay, the first international day of LGBTQ+ people...

Thoughts about the March for Science
Yesterday some of us attended the London Science March (I would say about 20 but I'm not really sure as I didn't get a chance to chat with everyone who I believe was with us). It was an exciting and exhilarating experience, and I'm glad I went! So, was the March for...
Some personal thoughts on the LGBT STEMinar 2017
Yesterday we had the honour of being part of the second LGBT STEMinar, and it was a triumph. The speakers were all absolutely delightful and incredibly knowledgeable in their field, jumping in and out of technical explanations with talent and humour. I don't think...
